about

Throughout the 1980's and 1990's, Dutch composer Roel Meelkop was active in the Rotterdam underground as a member of the no wave band Club Rialto (with Guido Doesberg and Jac "DMDN" Van Bussel) and the influential electro-acoustic quintet THU20 (Club Rialto + Jos Smolders and Peter Duimelinks). At the same time, Meelkop slowly began producing music on his own, resulting in a handful of cassette tapes under the pseudonyms Happy Halloween and Mailcop. Barely distributed outside of The Netherlands, these tapes showcased the formative experiments of a young composer finding his feet with some powerful, and remarkably prescient music.

"6 (Mailcop Rules)" collects the best selections from Roel Meelkop's earliest cassette-only albums, all recorded between 1985 and 1995. Raw and bold, the tapes feature a remarkably wide range of material. Some tapes explode with corrosive white-noise squall, not unlike the "harsh noise walls" that The Rita and Vomir would generate a decade later. Others demonstrated a rough, narrative musique concrete. Still other tapes include evocative, minimal acousmatic music recorded well before "lowercase" and trente oiseaux existed.
